Class Descriptions
Private Classes
Carol Ann Bauer, E-RYT500, offers private sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in any of the modalities taught at Phoenix Rising Internal Arts. Please feel free to schedule a private session to help address any special condition or needs you may have, to design a personal practice that fits your lifestyle, or to experience Yoga Therapy at its finest.
Yoga
Traditional Hatha Yoga classes are based primarily on the Iyengar traditions, and include physical postures (asanas) to produce strength and flexibility, breathing exercises (pranayama) to open up and energize the nervous system, and basic meditation techniques to de-stress and relax the body and mind. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time. More than merely an exercise system that makes profound physiological changes in the body, Yoga is a practice of transformation - a way to open the heart and develop compassion, find clarity and experience inner stillness. These classes emphasize listening to the body's needs and respecting its limits. This approach allows each of us, whether beginner or experienced Yoga practitioner, to receive the benefits of the practice just where we are.
Level 1 classes are for the beginning student or those who wish to deepen their understanding of safe alignment principles.
Level 1 - 2 classes teach basic Hatha Yoga postures used in all Yoga practices, emphasizing body alignment for safety, with a view toward increased intensity to produce further strength and flexibility. Basic pranayama (breathing) techniques will be included.
Level 2 and/or 3 yoga classes will further challenge the student's strength, flexibility and skill, with an emphasis on the flow of energy produced by longer holding times, more challenging postures, and will include pranayama and meditation practices.
Our Meditation classes will help you focus the mind, find deep states of relaxation, reduce stress, increase mindfulness and create an overall sense of calm and well-being.
Vinyasa Yoga classes are based upon Hatha Yoga's familiar Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) and designed to give you maximum workout with minimum stress. This Yoga workout conditions, tones and strengthens the body while producing flexibility, relieving stress, and effecting mental and physical balance. Some familiarity with basic Yoga postures is necessary, as this class moves more quickly than a traditional class.
Restorative Yoga classes incorporate pranayama (breathing practices) and de-stressing meditation techniques to deepen your understanding of the benefits that a well-rounded Yoga practice can bring. This class is an essential component for a balanced lifestyle in today's too-busy world!
Yoga Core classes focus on the core stabilization and strengthening needed for more challenging asanas (poses) and for the development of strong, elongated muscles that have been proven to be the healthiest type to have.
Pilates Mat Basics
Pilates Mat Work: - Pilates core stabilization techniques are an excellent adjunct to your Yoga practice. Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous physical benefits, including increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing; body core stability, specifically the abdomen and back muscles; and coordination, both muscular and mental. Posture, balance, and core strength are all increased, preparing the body for a more advanced Yoga practice. Private Pilates mat sessions only are available from a beginning to an advanced level.
T'ai Chi
T'ai Chi: Traditional Yang Family Style T'ai Chi Chuan is taught as it has been practiced for generations. This style is taught in three sections, each increasing in complexity. Often referred to as a "moving meditation", T'ai Chi is practiced daily by millions of people around the world. It emphasizes a range of weight-bearing movements designed to connect the body like a string of beads, while challenging the mind by memorizing a sequence of movements. T'ai Chi can improve energy levels, leading to better mental outlook, resilience to stress, and greater control over thought patterns.
Section I of the Traditional Yang Style 103 movement form covers the basics of T'ai Chi movement, body placement, breathing and mental focus.
Section II of the Traditional Yang Style 103 movement form continues the basic movements, adding more complex sequences and practice.
Section III of the Traditional Yang Style 103 movement form adds other sequences to those already mastered, including some requiring more strength and flexibility.
Sword (Saber) is available to experienced students as a continuation of this traditional art form.
Yang Style Thirteen Form: a 13-move complete short form created by Master Yang Zhenduo to accommodate those who need/want a shorter version of the traditional 103-move form. You can practice this form in less than 5 minutes in a small place. For beginning students or ongoing students wanting to learn this specialized form.
Qigong
Qigong, or energy work, consists of simple exercises involving body movement, breathing and mental visualization to create energy and circulate it throughout the physical body. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a healing art, Qigong promotes relaxation and an improved sense of well-being. Especially good for centering/grounding the body and focusing the mind. Qigong is included as part of each T'ai Chi class.
Specialty Workshops and Classes
Our specialty workshops, usually held on week-ends, focus on specific topics, with meticulous detail and care. They are an opportunity to experience Yoga at a more intense level, with exposure to aspects only touched upon in a regularly-scheduled class. Our workshops will up quickly so pre-registration is required! There is rarely room for drop-ins. Watch the web site for dates of these popular events.
Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra (Special 90-minute Class which is scheduled from time to time) is a powerful technique for inducing physical, mental and emotional relaxation. The deep relaxation in a conscious way. Create a new resolution or reinforce a current one each time and begin to change old mental patterns and habits. The deep relaxation that Yoga Nidra induces makes the subconscious very open to suggestion - resolve anything you like and begin to watch it come into being in your life! You don't have to be a yoga practitioner to experience this class. "Yoga Nidra is much more than a deep relaxations; it is a total experience that touches and awakens all parts of your being." (quote by Swami Janakananda) Space will be limited; watch for future scheduling!
Note: Classes are for Group Work. Private sessions subject to advance arrangement. In case some classes change on short notice, the website will be changed to reflect the change.
Professional instruction, personalized attention-always!
